Coffee General started in 2012 as a concept of providing an online ‘general coffee store’ for a selection of great New Zealand coffee roasters to showcase what they are doing in their art of coffee roasting. In 2013 we took the online concept and brought it into a physical location on Auckland’s North Shore in the nice little suburb of Birkenhead.

Coffee General was one of the country’s first cafes to debut such a range of coffee roasters for use on espresso and manual brewing and quickly became a favourite of both local’s and those further afield. In it’s opening year Coffee General acclaimed Metro’s best in suburb and Top 50 cafe award along with Sprudge’s ‘Top 5’ coffee destinations in Auckland.

From here, Coffee General opened additional sites in Takapuna, Newmarket and Millwater, and continued multiple stores until October 2019 at which point we narrowed our focus back to our grassroots store. We had a great time and learnt a lot in the other locations, and other folk came along and made these sites their own.

These days you can find us crafting brews every day (except Christmas) at our Birkenhead store, profiling our owns house roasts of Allies Coffee - united by coffee.
